Introduction To Southern Cape Goju Ryu

Jannie le Grange Sensei the pioneer of Goju Ryu Karate in the Southern Cape

During the summer of 1981 Jannie le Grange and his wife, Betsie and two year old son Rochèr, moved to George from Cape Town. He then held an Nidan grading and was an active member of the South Africa Goju Ryu Karate Association. Two years later he took over the local Karate-Do Club, that was founded by Sensei Rob Wiese during the 70’s, and directed the school in a more traditional path with affiliation to Okinawa Japan.

Our World Class Instructors Supporting Jannie Sensei

Betsie Le Grange Sensei

Behind every successful man…” — few words ring as true as they do for Betsie Sensei.

A mother not only to the next generation of leaders, but to the countless students who have walked through the dojo doors, she has nurtured discipline, character, and spirit with unwavering dedication. Southern Cape Goju Ryu would not be what it is today without her steadfast support of Jannie Sensei and her own invaluable teachings — a true pillar of the dojo.

More than a Sensei, she is an accomplished karateka in her own right, with multiple tournament victories in both Karate and Kobudo, embodying the strength, grace, and quiet determination that define the art.

Rocher Le Grange Sensei

Raised in a martial arts family, Rochèr Sensei was shaped from an early age by the guidance of his father, learning in the traditional Okinawan way — where knowledge is lived, practiced, and passed from generation to generation. He has devoted his life to the disciplines of Goju Ryu and Kobudo, embracing both their physical demands and deeper philosophy.

As part of the next generation of skilled and passionate instructors, he works tirelessly not only to pass on the techniques refined through years of dedication, but to faithfully preserve the original teachings of the masters who came before him.
